What makes Canadian goose down so special?

First, just a quick intro about Canada and its geese.. It gets pretty cold there, in extreme cases temperatures drop to minus 40° (!) Canadian geese, raised in the heartland of Canada are freely able to roam in the wide open prairies, of which are amongst the cleanest and freshest environment in the world for the raising of livestock.

Within their environment, they're able to grow up larger and stronger than other geese around the world. With a breast size significantly larger and wider than geese from other regions, this gives them a stronger, longer lasting goose down layer as well as a lighter, yet warmer down. Hutterite down is pretty scarce too, making it a rather sought after product!

Our 100% pure Canadian Goose Down, as they're all from the same breed, has a minimum and consistent 700 fill power.

The Nitty Gritty

These duvets are stitched with a baffle box construction. The square boxes are separated by a series of 1" internal fabric walls. These walls permit the duvet to expand so that the down can reach its maximum loft, allowing even distribution while still holding the down securely in place. Each box is individually filled with the exact amount of down required, and finished with double stitching and piped edging.

The filling is 100% Pure Canadian Goose down. The casing is a lovely 100% cotton. With a 500 high thread count for superior strength and a soft delicate finish it is especially produced for pure down

Canadian Weather demands the absolute best in thermal protection as conditions can be the worst to bear -- Ranging from Very HOT in the summer to Very COLD in the winter, where the Mercury dips well below -40 Degrees (YES that IS below ZERO)!

To endeavor the powerful winter blast up in Canada, true braveness from only the fiercest of beings has been a pre-requisite ever since the beginning of time ~ ~ ~ but not anymore!

I have discovered the secret to that oh-so-perfect balance of winter warmth, along with a light weight, silky soft touch feeling that will allow you to sleep as sound as a baby through all of winter's blues!

Tell me about silk

Silk is a natural product, resistant to dust mites and hypoallergenic. Our silk casing duvets give good protection to those who suffer from asthma and eczema.

Filling is 100% down, outer shell casing is silk cotton, 95% silk 5% cotton Silk is a breathable natural material. Our silk casing duvets offer extra warmth in winter, coolness in summer. For this reason, it is preferable to conventional duvets.

What are the benefits of silk over traditional duvets?

There are a number of significant advantages, the main ones are:

Silk, being a natural product is breathable and so enables your body to maintain a more stable temperature. This combined with some innovative duvet manufacturing techniques results in a duvet that really can change the way you sleep.

Because the silk duvet covering is able to let some heat escape through the grid design. This results in a more pleasant sleep because our body temperature is kept at a more constant temperature throughout the night.

Silk has some amazing hypoallergenic properties. Silk is a natural protein and therefore is far less hospitable to dust mites which can trigger allergic reactions such as asthma, eczema and rhinitis. Up to 20,000 dust mites have been known to live in a single mattress. The use of silk bedding and silk filled duvets greatly reduces the amount of dust mites in the bedroom.

The nature of long-strand silk fibers mean a silk duvet is just as warm but much lighter than traditional duvets, and drapes over your body instead of "suffocating" you with the bulk of a conventional duvet. Once you have experienced the softness and pure luxury of a silk duvet it is very difficult to consider using anything else.

Silk, being a natural product has a distinctive odour. This can often be mistaken for a slight chemical-like smell, but is just the natural odour of pure silk. In our experience the odour can be most noticeable when the duvets are first unpacked, but this dissipates after a few hours and is completely gone after a few days. Some duvet manufacturers bleach the silk before the manufacturing process to get rid of this smell. This totally undermines the natural properties of silk. duvets are not manufactured using harmful chemicals and as a result may have a natural silk odour.

What is Thread Count?

Thread count refers to the number of threads, both vertical and horizontal, in a one-inch square of fabric. Thread count is affected by a number of factors, including ply and thickness of the threads used. The ply of the fabric refers to how many threads are wrapped together into a single thread. Single-ply fabrics use threads on their own, while two-ply fabrics twist two pieces together into a stronger thread, as well as doubling the thread count of the fabric.

Using finer threads also allows for more thread to fit in a square inch. Finer thread often results in smoother, softer fabrics, part of the reason high thread count fabrics are considered more desirable than fabrics with a low thread count. Finer thread also results in a more fragile fabric, however, which may not always be ideal. Two-ply fabrics help solve this problem somewhat by strengthening the threads and creating a more durable, though heavier, fabric.

The general wisdom is that a thread count of higher than 100 is desirable - these fabrics are known as Percale - with somewhere above 180 being ideal. While fabrics are available with thread counts up to 1000, anything in excess of 400 is considered by most to be simply extraneous.

Because our Canadian and Goose down duvets and pillows are sterilised twice in the manufacturing process, they are classed as "hypo-allergenic", making them suitable for the whole family.

Other Info

Double needle stitching edge with self piping. Cassette contruction which means that the casing is divided into pockets into which the filling is placed. This ensures the filling does not move around ensuring an even spread of insulation and no cold patches.
